ORIGIN OF THE SITE

Volvic, the Stone and the Water

Known worldwide for its water, Volvic also has other teasures…This town is also the heart of rock working professions with a whole world of quarrymen, sculptors and lava rock enamellers.

At the end of the 13th century the mining of Volvic lava marked a real turning point in the market town’s life … Volvic rock has featured in the history of many Auvergne towns and gave form to the Clermont-Ferrand cathedral, as well as other cathedrals in Paris for example, before finding new channels in the chemical industry. This rock endures as a noble material that is crafted by many artisans.

La Grotte de la Pierre de Volvic, a site that reinvents itself

Lying north of the Chaîne des Puys, 15 kilometres from Clermont-Ferrand, the site has an exceptional natural setting. This gallery, mined for lava rock, was created by a lava flow from the Nugère Volcano that erupted 13,000 years ago.

The complete history of Volvic rock comes to life in a cinematic discovery trail®. From the gallery’s origin to everyday Volvic life, from harsh labour conditions to how the rock is used, become a privileged witness to this emotive place.

In 2016, our new installation “The Eternal Rock” prominently features committed artisans and artists who fashion, sculpt and shape this resolutely modern material.

FOCUS ON…

Jean Legay-Chevalier

portrait

The key words to describe this remarkable man are “versatility and talent”. He was a quarryman, sculptor, inventor who contributed to the development of modern rock techniques, farmer, viticulturist, teacher … and lastly, discoverer of the famous Volvic water.
