A man who had an odd fate, born in 1856 and died in 1915 in Volvic.
An individual who had thirst for knowledge...
Successively Volvic’s stone operator, wine-grower or teacher at the architecture school, this outstanding man was involved in the accomplishment of projects aimed at improving life and work conditions in the 1900s.
By dint of his know-how and his inventive mind, he created machines which improved the quarrying and a take-down crane called “cheval de bois” (wooden horse), which made his yard more practical.
Facing the problem of the transport of Volvic’s stone, he contributed to the design of the rail road called “Batignoles”, which connected Riom to Volvic.
The discovery of an underground stream in the depths of the volcano-which is the origin of the famous Vovic’s water-is without contest the one which marked its period. At first Chevalier’s researches where fruitless, but they enabled the use of this spring a few years later.
